Hillary Clinton Says She’s Ready to Step Off ‘the High Wire of American Politics’Last edited Thu Jan 26, 2012, 04:32 PM USA/ET - Edit history (3)
It’s not the first time she’s said she’s leaving government service after her current job, but Secretary of State Hillary Clinton definitively said today she wants out of politics.
During a town hall meeting with State Department employees this morning Clinton said she is ready to step off “the high wire of American politics.” She said she’s paying no attention to the battle for the Republican presidential nomination and hasn’t watched any of the debates. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/hillary-clinton-says-shes-ready-to-step-off-the-high-wire-of-american-politics She did a great job. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would have been happy with either her or President Obama in the White House in 2008. (Edited for a better link. We've known that she will step down for some time. But not quite yet.)

...this country way beyond what anyone should be asked to do, as an attorney, as Arkansas' first lady, as our country's first lady, as a Senator, as a candidate for President and as Secretary of State. (It makes me exhausted just thinking about it.)
I am glad she is putting herself on her own 'to do' list. I hope she enjoys her time away. In the future, should she choose to seek office again, I'll support her 100%. Thank you, Hillary! |

She's basically giving them notice. Now's the time, if you wanna jump, to do it. You have a shot at a good slot in another agency, maybe working for a bullet proof incumbent on the Hill working international/state issues? JUMP! Go now! Get the good reference while people are still here to give it to you. Also, understand that if you are in one of my SECSTATE-designated "grace and favor" jobs, that the new guy or gal is going to want to put his/her own people in that slot, so start looking around for another slot in the civil service tier you might be able to slide into....
That's how I see it, anyway. To my view, it IS LBN--for those reasons, alone. |

I knew she'd grow into the job as SOS and she did. She's been one of the better ones we've seen in the past 40 years or so. However, it's an exhausting job, the jet lag alone burning people out in record time. Books and speaking engagements will be a lot easier on her. I hope she does both. |

|
Being in LBN, it would seem open to various opinions?
I haven't read anything here even half as rough as what I've said on the site any number of times about HRC. Since when is calling someone a DLCer beyond the pale? I couldn't care less whether HRC goes or stays - whichever, whomever is in the position will be a good servant of the MIC, so what matter which face s/he wears? That I personally will be just as happy to not have to see or hear her so often is incidental. Changing the face will not change the hypocritical stock-phrases about how the US is bringing "peace and freedom" around the world, or the pandering to our sacred "homeland" "security." She's served our Masters well and they've rewarded her well. Maybe they'll give her the Nobel Peace too. I'm sure she'll be more than comfortable in her retirement. It won't matter a lick to the rest of us. |

She's doing that stuff herself, and if her college years are any indication, she's a hippie from way back when, so I'm guessing she doesn't place a Callista-like emphasis on that kind of crap.
We also now see her under the glare of very unkind television lights, on digital televisions. No more fuzzy softness of the analog signals. It's a cruel venue, no matter who you are. And no shower? That's flat out cruel. She should be able to "live aboard" if need be.
Remember when GWHB and Bill Clinton--fresh off of heart surgery--went to help with tsunami aid on one of the old planes that used to do duty as AF ONE? Poppy grabbed the one bed, so Bill, fresh scar and all, had to sleep on the floor. Now if it were me, even if I were the older guy, I'd give the bed to the guy who just got outta heart surgery....but I couldn't sleep if I knew that someone fresh off the operating table wasn't able to be comfortable. I was astounded that the staff didn't fucking THINK, myself--that would be the first thing I would have done if I were managing a trip for a distinguished set of visitors--you make sure there's enough food, enough places to crap/toilet paper, places to sleep, and a medicine chest full of OTC meds for any/every malady. Even if they had to haul in a cot and bolt it to the floor, they should have configured the place so both presidents could lay down and sleep. |

but politics is in the Clintons' blood and Hillary has more stamina than people half her age.
There's this: "I have made it clear that I will certainly stay on until the president nominates someone and that transition can occur" if Obama wins re-election, she told a town hall meeting. "But I think after 20 years, and it will be 20 years, of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am." But, she appeared to leave the door open for a possible eventual return, adding to laughter from the crowd that "everyone always says that when they leave these jobs." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/26/hillary-clinton-stepping-down_n_1234221.html So, here's hoping that after some time of much derserved rest she decides to run for president in 2016. |

124. I believe that she has done an excellent job as SOS -

she has done a credible job in rebuilding much of the goodwill lost during the 2001-2008 period.
Unfortunately, the Obama Administration inherited two unnecessary (one, at least, also illegal) wars in addition to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It is still too heavy-handed in using military options/solutions, IMO. While I have not always been happy with the pace of withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan, at least it is happening. What is sad is to see the devastation and instability that have been left behind after throwing trillions of $$$ badly needed in the US into the money pits, basically increasing the gap between wealthy and poor in those societies as well as our own and exacerbating their religious and ethnic differences, not to mention opening up more opium traffic from Afghanistan to the West. Those adverse consequences don't even include the hundreds of thousands of lives lost on all sides, as well as the millions whose lives have been adversely affected both here and abroad. What continues to taint US foreign policy throughout much of the world, however, is the consistently festering - and, at times, explosive - I-P situation. So long as it exists as it does, there will never be stability anywhere in the ME, let alone peace. Frankly, so long as the USG continues to heed the most radically RW voices (both Jewish & Christian) in this matter, no fair resolution - or sadly even rational discussion of how best to proceed - will be allowed here. |

134. This makes me so sad.

It sounds like she really isn't going to run in 2016. I was really, REALLY! hoping she would.

138. I question the timing of this announcement. I love Hillary and hope to see her stay in politics ....

Last edited Fri Jan 27, 2012, 12:37 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) I know that she has previously made a similar declaration earlier last year. I think it is odd that she would make this announcement right after the SOTU speech. I don't know how that looks for Obama. I don't think it was necessary for her to come out with such a strong message of NO given that she still has high approval ratings and it makes the Obama White House team not sound very cohesive (though I know that the SoS doesn't always stay on for a second term. I wonder if there is more to this......maybe it is wishful thinking on my part. In any event, she is an amazing human being--intelligent accomplished and inspiration to many--I still would like to see her run and WIN in 2016! =)

139. She was responding to a question.

She didn't call a press conference to announce her departure. Besides, she has been saying the same thing for months now.
As for her approval rating. She has been the most popular politician in the country for a long time now. I too hope that she changes her mind and decides to run in 2016. |

141. I don't blame her - She's been great

I can't get over how tired she looked at the President's State of the Union address. She's worked so hard. No one could've done better and more and she deserves to enjoy what's left of her life and health instead of having it ruined by the cares and concerns of this corrupt government.
