U2 guitarist may get a second chance at Malibu mansions

Source: Los Angeles Times

SACRAMENTO The California Coastal Commission rejected a controversial proposal last year by U2 guitarist the Edge to build five mansions on a scenic bluff above Malibu, saying that it would scar a rugged ridgeline and harm sensitive habitat.

Now, some of the same powerful lobbyists and lawyers behind the musician's quashed development are working the halls of the Capitol to push a bill that could give the rock star another chance at his dream compound.

..................................................

Developers at times try to skirt the issue by claiming each homesite has a different owner. They shield the identities through formation of limited liability corporations.

In the case of the Edge, whose real name is David Evans, the agency denied his plans because it said he was attempting to bypass environmental rules and maximize development by submitting five separate applications, each under a different corporate name.

This really reflects upon the ethics of The Edge, or lack thereof.

I expected much better from U2.

4. I lived in Malibu . . .

. . . many years ago, before it was "The Malibu". So sad to see people with too much money ruin such a beautiful place on this planet.

5. If you paid attention.

.... you would not expect better of "U2", especially Bono.

He's a fucking fraud.

6. U2 has to be one of the biggest frauds in the music industry

I like some of U2's music, a few of their songs even approach the level of greatness. While I think their musical abilities are highly overrated, they are certainly not bad musically. As people though they are complete frauds, acting as spokespeople for the poor while simultaneously doing everything they can to make themselves look superior to the people they set out for photo ops with. Don't get me wrong they have done some good things, but they do plenty of harm as well. Roger Waters and David Gilmour have also done a lot of really great things and given huge amounts of money to charity and don't suck up to the right-wing while they do it, their music is also a hell of a lot better than U2. Their work may not grab the headlines like Bono's does, but it has been far more admirable.

19. +infinity. Another sucky 80s band

U2 - pretentious frauds, and every damn song sounds the same. And amen to Waters and Gilmore - hell, I believe Waters' own mother was a registered socialist.

7. U2 sucks, their music sucks, and I hate Bono's stupid glasses.

On the other hand, I think the other douchecanoes who live in Malibu deserve them. Somebody approve the guitarist with a stage name so stupid I can't bear to type it, on the condition that he builds next to Mel Gibson's spread. I'll make popcorn.

How did that happen?

9. Malibu covers a large area ...

and people head up higher and higher into those fire-prone hills .....

not to mention mudslides and earthquakes.

edit to add:

The Malibu coastline is 27 miles long. I just looked it up.

I just have an impression of unlimited urban sprawl, which doesn't attract me. Good to know there's some space left.

23. I used to think that too

I finally went to LA for the first time at age 42. I was quite surprised how beautiful it is. There is a considerable amount of open space and undeveloped land, within LA city limits.

I also had this vision of unlimited urban sprawl, but was pleased to find lots of nice hikes and open space.

26. The mudslides can be really devastating. Especially after fire season.

A lot of that terrain in upper Malibu is almost unreachable, so when there are brushfires, it's just really shitty.

What the fuck does this dude need five mansions for? It's funny - their public image doesn't suggest living so lavishly, in such obscene opulence. I've always had issues with celebrities, especially rock stars, who "title" themselves with these pretentious names. What's so wrong with the name yer mama gave you? Oooooh, Mr. Edge. Ooooooh. I'm impressed.

NOT.

10. They have their problems, but the California Coastal Commission has been a godsend

Visitors from other parts of the country who come to visit me on the California coast are often amazed at how relatively undeveloped things are. Given the growing trend toward rapacious privatization and so-called "austerity measures," I don't know how much longer our coastline will survive.

18. Sure, lots of it. Every rich asshole that moves in goes to work trying to stop the

next rich asshole from being able to move in.

That is when they're not begging the state for emergency funds to rebuild their mansions at taxpayer expense when the ocean washes them out to sea.

22. I wish it were at least an exaggeration, but that's what goes on all the time.

I've lost count of the suits/counter-suits of Mel Gibson alone. OTOH, it is a pretty entertaining diversion for those of us outside looking in.

If you were made a multi-millionaire today, do you think it would change who you are, over time? Rhetorical question, not an accusation.
