Prison guards boil man to death and won't be charged..BLACK man

On June 23, 2012, Darren Rainey, a schizophrenic man serving time for cocaine possession, was thrown into a prison shower at the Dade Correctional Institution. The water was turned up to 180 degrees — hot enough to steep tea or cook ramen noodles.

As his punishment, four corrections officers — John Fan Fan, Cornelius Thompson, Ronald Clarke, and Edwina Williams — kept Rainey in that shower for two full hours. Rainey was heard screaming, "Please take me out! I can’t take it anymore!” and kicking the shower door. Inmates said prison guards laughed at Rainey and shouted, "Is it hot enough?"

Rainey died inside that shower. He was found crumpled on the floor. When his body was pulled out, nurses said burns covered 90 percent of his body. A nurse said his body temperature was too high to register with a thermometer. And his skin fell off at the touch.

They held the trial IN TOWN. Starke is a not so much a city, but a street. (A really short one, at that). Everyone is related to everyone - or at least a neighbor. And they held the trial right there.

3. floriduh

no surprises (that nothing will happen). I heard this story and have been following it. I've worked in the FL prisons (I'm a therapist).

It's bad.................but it's also a good ol'boys club. I used to tell the guys I worked with that if someone were degrading/insulting (and believe me, it was bad) - I wouldn't do a thing. If someone assaulted them, I'd report it.

Then the next day I'd quit. You can't report something and stay. You wouldn't survive.

Seems like justice is dead sometimes. Unpunished and underpunished atrocities every direction I look lately.

8. Guards torturing prisoners, even to death

has gone on forever. For the most part they weren't punished for it. This isn't some recent development. The only thing that's new and different is that nowadays it sometimes makes the news when it happens. Back in the day you wouldn't have heard about it at all.

6. Abuse of Mentally Ill Prisoners is Common

My son was jailed last year in a county jail. He was psychotic and suffering from withdrawal from drugs.

He got no services or medications for his symptoms. When the guards tried to move him to a higher level of supervision. When he resisted, five guards tackled and tased him. He was taken to isolation where he spent three weeks. When his sentence was completed, he was released directly to the streets.

We have spent hundreds of dollars to get records of his incarceration, training records for the individual guards, and specific details of his circumstances. Our findings show that guards have little relevant training in methods to defuse confrontational behaviors by mentally ill prisoners. With over half of the jail population suffering from a mental health diagnosis, this is unacceptable. We are shaing our finding with members of the County Commission, and advocating for reforms.

We are happy to report that our son is doing well, and is on the road to recovery.

The Florida situation is a conspiracy and a homicide. The guards AND the chain of command should be jailed. The prosecutor should resign.
